The Wines

Fall Line endeavors to produce well-structured, balanced blends that exhibit grace and depth - characteristics that will allow its wines to be enjoyed on their own or as part of an exquisite dining experience.

Current Vintage - 2005: Ample summer heat and moderate fall conditions produced perfectly balanced, vibrant fruit. The Red Mountain blend is powerful, yet elegant, with layered aromas of spice and fruit. The Horse Heaven Hills blend draws in the senses with its deep aromas and black fruit. The Columbia Valley cabernet intrigues with complex aromas and unctuous texture. Here are the winemaker's notes.

2003 Vintage: Fall Line produced a single debut blend of 54% cabernet sauvignon from Boushey and Shaw and 46% merlot from Destiny Ridge. The wine was aged 20 months in French oak, 25% new. It was bottled on July 9, 2005. 98 cases were produced. Here are the winemaker's notes. (This wine is sold out.)

2004 Vintage: In November 2006, Fall Line released three new wines from the 2004 vintage. Two of these three wines are single-vineyard blends of merlot, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon from Artz Vineyards on Red Mountain and Destiny Ridge Vineyards in Horse Heaven Hills. The third is a blend of 100% cabernet sauvignon from all three of the winery's vineyard sources - Artz, Destiny Ridge, and Boushey. The wines were aged in 100% French oak, 35% new. Here are the winemaker's notes. (These wines are sold out.)

2005 Vintage: Fall Line continues to produce the same style of blends - two highlighting place, the third highlighting varietal character - as in 2004. In 2005, fruit for the winery's Horse Heaven Hills blend was sourced from Aldercreek and Windy Ridge at Groth Vineyards Northwest.

2006+: Fruit for the Horse Heaven Hills blend is now sourced entirely from Aldercreek Vineyard.

2008: Beginning with the 2008 harvest, the winery will produce an additional vineyard blend featuring cabernet franc, merlot, and a bit of cabernet sauvignon from Red Willow.

2009: In 2009, Fall Line is slated to produce its first tempranillo based blend - the winery's only departure from Bordeaux style wines. This blend will comprise Boushey fruit planted specially for Fall Line Winery. Tempranillo is a noble varietal whose fame derives from the Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions of Spain. Though it will be a bit more time before the fruit for this blend makes its appearance, the wine has already been named: It will be called...well, the unveiling will have to wait.

Production

All fruit is hand sorted, de-stemmed and gently crushed directly into small, open top fermentors. The crushed fruit is cold-soaked for a short period, then each fermentor is inoculated with a selected yeast strain. Primary fermentations generally take place over a period of about two weeks. Caps are punched down by hand multiple times daily over the duration of the fermentation. Upon completion of the primary fermentation, the free run juice is transferred to barrel, and the must is gently pressed using a stainless steel hydraulic basket press. The wine completes a secondary, malolactic, fermentation in barrel.

All wines are aged for approximately 18 months in 100% select French oak barrels, of which 30% to 40% are new. The wines are racked about three times a year.

Case production has risen from fewer than 100 for Vintage 2003 to almost 1,000 for Vintage 2004, 1,300 for Vintage 2005, and around 2,000 for Vintage 2006. Fall Line plans on long-term production of about 2,000 cases per year.
